Suffering

Longsuffering, when there's no end in sight

On Struggling Well, Jimmy and Suzi don't treat suffering as a problem to solve on a schedule. They talk about longsuffering, two words rather than one, for the seasons when the struggle is long and there's no end in sight. Across these conversations they keep returning to a few honest convictions: that suffering takes more than one form, that there are no neat and tidy steps through it, and that God's silence in the waiting is not the same as his absence.

In their words

I would like to categorize what we're talking about too as longsuffering, two words not one word, that some of us are in a place where the suffering and the struggle is long, and like Jimmy said there feels like there's no end in sight.

Suzi, Ep 049

There's the struggle that comes from our disobedience. The second is the struggle we face because we live in a broken, fallen world. The third, God uses to test and refine our faith, to make us more like his son. And the fourth is the struggle that comes because there's an enemy out there.

Jimmy, Ep 049

There's no steps to suffering. There's no nice and neat and tidy steps to grieving. Some of it also comes from we are afraid. It's like, if this suffering doesn't end for this person, I might catch it.

Suzi, Ep 050

I've always had this picture that I'm groaning, but Jesus is over on the sideline going, ‘Get over it. Get on with your life.’ And the thought that has recently been introduced again was, ‘No, he's groaning with you.’ And that was a powerfully different way to look at the situations I've been in.

Jimmy, Ep 097

We think that silence means stillness. Silence gets interpreted as he's gone or he doesn't care versus he's working all the time. We just can't see it.

Jimmy & Suzi, Ep 129

What did he do for 29 years? Nothing. And what was his ministry? Three years. That's nothing in comparison to what we think of as successful today. So if you are in a place where it looks like you're dry and dusty and disappointed, could it be that in that hard place, God is preparing you for what he is going to ask of you?
