Grief & Lament

Honest sorrow that never lets go of God

When grief comes, Jimmy and Suzi refuse to rush it or tidy it up. They describe grief that arrives as a strange fatigue, that ignores the stages we wish it would follow, and that can tempt us to pull away from other people just when we need them most. Alongside it they make room for lament: not venting at God, but a form of worship that raises every fear and complaint honestly while never letting go of him.

In their words

What has hit me now is this very strange fatigue. Wouldn't it be great if there were stages and you could click them off — but that is not how grief goes. I think sometimes we judge people's grief by the way we would handle grief.

Jimmy & Suzi, Ep 181

Lament is not just releasing all the pent up stuff you have inside of you. It really is a form of worship. It's not just screaming at God about what you think he's done wrong. It's really an act of worship of, I believe that you're there, God, that you're present and that you will hear my cry.

Jimmy, Ep 053

It's okay to cry out and to say, ‘I don't understand this.’ I think where we would get in trouble is when we cross the same line Jeremiah crossed and say, ‘God, you're not life.’ Lament, raise my fears, my complaints, my misunderstandings. Absolutely. Just don't ever say he's not life.

Jimmy, Ep 090

It's that split vision of the world that we live in. That's the lament — there's something wrong in this world that comes up short of what we were designed for, and that can create discouragement, that can create sadness. But then he says, ‘I'll put my hope in God.’

Jimmy, Ep 190

That person is going to carry that loss way beyond those initial days and weeks. Don't assume because it's been a period of time that there's not a place where you can bring encouragement. ‘I know it was a year ago when you lost so-and-so. What are the things you remember about their life that bring you joy?’
